Why are we so hard on darkness – especially in Christian and other religious traditions? This retreat helps us explore how the dark, as much as the light, can be affirming and healing. Cathy Bird, a Methodist minister in London, is a devoted lover of the dark. Her new book The Divine Heart of Darkness draws on, among other things, her visits to Svalbard where people live in unbroken night for more than three months each year. We can’t match that, but with Othona far from streetlights and January’s daylight hours so short, this will be a very experiential retreat.
