Travel Tips

Timing Your Arrival

Our residential events usually begin with the evening meal at 6pm or 6.30pm. Please arrive after 4.00pm if possible, since we may not be around to greet you earlier on. If you do plan to arrive early – or late enough to need food saved in the evening – please ring or email to alert us.

Traveline is a handy tool for planning your journey and more tips are below.

The house is situated on the B3157. This is the main coastal road from Bridport to Weymouth. We are midway between the villages of Burton Bradstock and Swyre (and on the seaward side of the road). Please take care when turning in at Othona; cars from both directions try to overtake on the hill outside our drive.

Satnav: Our postcode is DT6 4RN
(Google Maps sometimes shows our address as 'SW Coastal Path'. We are on the Coast Road!)

The nearest stations are Dorchester South and Weymouth on newly renamed South Western Railway. On weekdays there are trains from London Waterloo at 05 and 35 minutes past most hours – times differ at weekends.

Heart of Wessex trains offer connections via Bristol to Dorchester West and Weymouth – often more convenient and economical for travellers from the Midlands or North.

Book as early as possible to get lower cost tickets. Also Network Railcards are valid for our stations and offer 30% discount.

Note: Due to the change of ownership, South Western Railway no longer offers Megatrain tickets. :-(

Bridport is our nearest town. There are coach connections to Bridport from various parts of the country. The coach which serves Bridport is the National Express 315 (from Eastbourne to Helston) but it is possible to change onto this, particularly at Bournemouth (if coming from London) or Dorchester (if coming from Bristol and the Midlands). From Dorchester there is also the much more frequent X51 First Bus to Bridport. (See 'Bus Connections' below for more info on buses.)

There is also a coach service from Heathrow airport to Bournemouth: Flightlink 205. Coach timetables change between summer and winter. Please check times and seat availability by visiting the National Express website or by ringing 08705 808 080.

Also check out Megabus - especially if you are traveling from mainland Europe.

Bus X53, which runs between Weymouth and Axminster, goes past Othona.  Drivers have been instructed that they cannot stop outside Othona, so please alight at the next official stop – Cogden Beach (from Weymouth) and Swyre (from Axminster or Bridport) and phone us to be picked up (01308 897130).  Please don’t walk along the road – it is far too dangerous!

To find the time of the relevant bus, we encourage you to use the First Bus website and put Cogden Beach as your destination.  First Bus also have a telephone number 0345 646 0707.

N.B. Bus X53 starts and finishes just outside Weymouth rail station.

For planning the whole of your journey by public transport (including both bus and train), we find the Traveline website very helpful.

When leaving, you’ll find lifts are often available from other departing visitors.
