In Search of Adela Curtis, a 20th Century Mystic

Who was Adela Curtis (1867 – 1960)?  She was a mystic, a teacher, a healer, a prolific writer, an advocate for self-sufficiency, the joint owner of a pioneering bookshop, and the founder of religious communities.

What is it like to investigate a remarkable woman like this? How much is there to discover?

In October 2023, Liz Howlett, who has been Office Co-ordinator at Othona West Dorset for over 4 years, went on a trip to the USA. She hoped the time she spent in the States would contribute towards the research she was doing into the life and work of Adela Curtis – and the trip exceeded her expectations! 

This weekend event will draw on Liz’s growing knowledge of and continuing research into Adela and her communities; her teachings and her supporters.

As well as being a key member of the core community at Othona, Liz Howlett is ordained in the Church of England. Most of her ministry has been focussed on training and empowering lay people to play the fullest part in their churches and communities. She has been keen on genealogical research for most of her life.

Living locally you could have the option of attending the whole weekend including all meals as a non-resident. Or just coming over for one or more of Liz's talk sessions. Here's the timetable.  

Our charge for full non-resident participation is £140; please book online. If you just come to individual sessions we invite you to make a suitable donation. In this case there's no need actually to book. but please be with us 15 minutes before the stated start time for any session.
