Brian McLaren is well known as author of such books as A New Kind of Christian, Naked Spirituality and Faith After Doubt. His life has brought him from fundamentalism to a radically inclusive Christian stance. And in April 2024 he published Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart.

To quote its cover "Life After Doom is a sober analysis of where we stand in relation to potential climate, economic and social breakdown, and a deeply insightful exploration into how we live well, maintain resilience and grow in wisdom, love and hope in the face of nations, ecosystems, economies, religions, and other institutions in disarray."

In the autumn Othona warden Tony Jaques ran a book group about it on Zoom. Now he offers this special weekend, when we can share our understandings of the book and respond to its themes in a range of practical ways. Those are likely to include open discussion, seeing Brian McLaren himself on video, contemplation, art and music, labyrinth walking, maybe even a board game or two (really) and creative worship - all to explore how we might live well in the shadow of doom.

Do you struggle with a sense of doom? Do you long to see more of a whole picture, in company with others who share your concerns? Do you wonder where hope lies? This could be the weekend for you.

Co-faciltator with Tony will be Helen Carter, who has been a print photographer's darkroom technician, a professional seafarer and a librarian - though not simultaneously! Helen first became involved with environmental issues as a teenager in the 1980s. Connecting with others in community and finding ways to live and work together responsibly and humanely are increasingly important to her.

To take full part you'll need to have read McLaren's challenging book in advance. (If you were on the autumn book zooms, this weekend will add dimensions that weren't possible online.)

Comments about the Zoom Group: "so thought provoking and deep" "could be overwhelming trying to read it alone so the book group is perfect" "really helpful - after years of feeling what next/what's the point?"
