This new event at Othona is for adults in families where at least one adult cares for at least one other. You may be caring for your partner, your adult children, your parents or it may be that both of you care for one another.

We know that people who care need a break and sometimes this involves leaving your loved one in what might be called respite or short break care. However this is a different type of break, providing a safe space and a group of other people in a similar situation to enjoy a break together in community.

If you are a carer then you could come alone, but we are imagining most will come with the person they support. Othona offers a warm welcome, beautiful grounds and homecooked meals, often with home grown produce. This will be chance to relax together with options for short walks, arts and crafts, maybe singing together and sessions with a carer support worker.

We want to be as inclusive as possible, but we are not able to take over the caring role, rather to offer you a space to be together within community.  We can accommodate one or two wheelchair users who can self-transfer, but our site is not fully accessible throughout. We are happy to welcome people with dementia and learning difficulties but this break would not be suitable for people who need constant supervision.

Hosting your time with us will be Susanna Wallace, a carer support worker, and Kathryn Brooks, a social worker with extensive experience in this area. They are, respectively, a former and a current member of Othona's core community.

If you are keen to join this break, please talk with us about your needs so we can decide together if this will be something that will work for you. An email to bookings@othonawestdorset.org.uk is the best way to start the conversation, which we may carry on by phone, as appropriate.

If you can afford our fees, then to pay them means we can support more people who can’t. If you can’t afford our fees, please don’t be put off but talk to us to see how we can help.
